1. Patrick GUIN was born before 1734.

General Notes: I believe Patrick was the brother of Robert Gwin, Sr., of the Calfpasture river in Augusta Co., VA., though I don't have "proof".

Augusta co:
1742 - Patr. Quine listed in Capt. John Smith's company in the muster rolls of Augusta co. [Chalkley vol 2 p. 508]

22 Aug 1749 - John Hopes (Hays? Hope?) of Frederick, & Mary, to Patrick Quin, 200 acres patented to said John Hopes 12 Jan 1746, on Naked Creek, corner Jost Hite, Robert McKay, Wm Duff, Robert Green's line. Teste: David Logan, John Homes. [Chalkley vol 3 p. 274]

1756 - land processioned from Fairfax's line to North River, for Pat. Quen (Owen), Danl. Love, Randolph McDonald, and others [Chalkley vol 2 p. 443]

17 May 1759 - Samuel Scott's estate settlement included payment to Patrick Quin, widow McDonald, others. [Chalkley vol 3 p. 53]

1760 Pat. Guin was listed in list of lands processioned. [Chalkley vol II, p.465]

18 Nov 1761: Jonathan & Jemima Douglass to Patrick Quin for 20 lbs, 350 acres on the head of Broad Run a branch of the North River of the Shanandore, part of 2 tracts - one of 400 acres patented to Jonathan on 11 July 1761, the other of 400 acres also patented to Jonathan adj. above, cor. Nicholas Mace. [Chalkley vol 3 p. 378]

23 June 1763: Patrick Quin is mentioned as now owning land that formerly belonged to Jonathan Douglass, on Broad Run a branch of the North River of the Shanandore. [Chalkley vol 3 p. 401]

1767-1768: Pat. Guin was listed in list of lands processioned; so was Jennett McDonald (probably his mother in law). [Chalkley vol II, p.456]

21 Mar 1770: Patrick Quin is mentioned as now owning land that formerly belonged to Jonathan Douglass, on Broad Run a branch of the North River of the Shanandore. [Chalkley vol 3 p. 496]

21 Aug 1772 - Patrick Gwenn (Gween, Gwinn) and Jean (Jeanet) to Phelix Gilbert, on head of Broad Run a branch of the North River of Shanandore, part of 2 tracts patented to Jonathan Douglass, corner Nicholas Mace. Teste: Daniel Smith. Delivered. [Augusta Deed Bk 19, p.20 - Chalkley vol 3 p. 526]

16 Nov 1774 - William Patterson& Mary of Cumberland Co, Pennsylvania, to Patrick Quin, a tract joint property of 4 sisters, heirs of Randal McDonald dec's, patented to John Hope 5 Sept 1749 and conveyed by him to Randal McDonald, who died intestate, and Mary, wife of William Patterson, became invested in the 1/4 part on Cook's Creek.

1 Mar 1777: Mark Bannister's estate appraised by John Smith, Wm Herring, Patrick Queen. [Chalkley vol 3 p. 147]

Patrick later lived in Rockingham county.

There is a possibility there was also a John Guinn and William Guinn as children of Patrick & Jeanet, but they are not listed in their mother's will. It is possible there were one or two other children not mentioned in Jinny's will. There was a John/Johnston Guinn living with or near them in Rockingham Co., VA, married to Polly Pry. A Johnston Guinn moved to KY. I'll keep looking.

Patrick married Jeanet McDONALD before 1754.

General Notes: She had a grandson named Daniel McDonald Guin, a great-granddaughter named Jenny McDonald Guin and a great-grandson named R. McDonald Guinn (brother of my gg-grandfather Robert McPherson Guinn). I am speculating that his full name was probably Randolph McDonald Guinn, but he went by McDonald in order to distinguish him from his great-uncle or grandfather Randolph Guinn. I still have not proven who my gggg-grandfather was, but it was either Hugh or Randolph Guinn.

Here's the proof that Janet/Jane/Jeanet McDonald d/o Randolph md. Patrick Guinn:

Chalkley's Records of Augusta Co., VA Order Book #VI, 1745-1800:
March 1769
"Fowler vs. Skidmore-Bill in Chancery, filed 1764-5. John Fowler and Margaret, his wife, William Patterson and Mary, his wife, Patrick Quinn (my notation:I believe this is Guinn) and Jane, his wife, which said Margaret, Mary and Jane, together with Sarah, since intermarried with James Skidmore, were sisters and co-heirs of Randolph McDonald of Augusta County, deceased, against James Skidmore and Sarah, his wife. Randolph died intestate unmarried and without children. Randolph's mother was Janet McDonald. Randolph was 26 years old when he died."

November 16, 1757
"Jennett McDonald administers on estate of her deceased son Randall McDonald."

Date not noted on this but the Frame family bought land from Jennet Stark, alias McDonald

So these people were siblings: Margaret McDonald Fowler, Mary McDonald Patterson, Jane McDonald Guinn, Sarah McDonald Skidmore,& Randolph McDonald. There was also an Alexander McDonald baptised in 1740, listed as the son of Randolph McDonald. This was the father of the above children. The younger Randolph McDonald was born about 1731 and died about 1757. The elder Randolph McDonald was listed as a member of the "Tinkling Spring Meeting House" in Augusta Co. on the 8/14/1741 membership roll, and also as having bought 141 acres of land in Augusta County between 1738 and 1744.
Since Jennett/Jane McDonald was the administrator of her son Randolph's estate, I assumed that his father was dead. I think this would have been unusual for the mother to administer the estate rather than the father. In the same court record book we found:
June, 1747
"James McClelhill vs. Andrew McClure-James and Jane, his wife, admrs. of Randal McDonnald. Writ dated 25th February, 1745."
February 16, 1748
"Henry Downs petitions for counter security from Jane McDonald, widow and admx. of Randol McDonald (admn. granted in Orange), now the wife of Joseph McClallan."
March 17, 1747/8
"Joseph McClelhill and Jane, late widow of Randolph McDonall, to give counter security."
So it looks like the family tree is this:
Generation 1:
Jane/Jennett Stark McDonald married James or Joseph McClelhill/McClellan after the death of her first husband Randolph McDonald, around 1745. Randolph and Jane/Jennett McDonald were the parents of these children:
Margaret McDonald Fowler
Mary McDonald Patterson
JANE MC DONALD GUINN
Sarah McDonald Skidmore
Randolph McDonald
Alexander McDonald

17 May 1759 - Alexander McDonald's bond (with John Ramsey, John Poage) to administer estate of Joseph McClelhill. On same day, "widow McDonald and Patrick Quin" are mentioned in estate payments of Samuel Scott. [Chalkley vol 3 p. 53]

Children from this marriage were:

2 M    i. Daniel GUIN was born before 1754 in Virginia and died from 1803 to 1810 in Greene co, Tennessee.

General Notes: MARCH 25, 1775 (61) Bethuell Herring, vice Daniel Guinn--Constable [Chalkley, vol 1, p.184] -- vice means replacing

Smith vs. Herring--O. S. 46; N. S. 16. Daniel Gwinn, of Rockingham, has left the State, 1803. [Chalkley vol 2, p.87]

Daniel Guinn was constable in Augusta County, VA. He moved to Greene Co., TN in 1803 and died there shortly after. I have not seen a record of Daniel being married.

Noted events in his life were:

• Immigration: 1803, Greene co, Tennessee.

+ 3 M    ii. James GUIN Sr. was born about 1747 in Jamestown, Virginia and died in 1824 in Greene co, Tennessee about age 77.

+ 4 M    iii. Robert GUIN Esq. was born before 1773 in Virginia (probably Augusta co) and died on 19 Nov 1813 in Greene co, Tennessee.

+ 5 M    iv. Hugh GUIN was born from 1750 to 1765 in Virginia.

6 M    v. Randolph GUIN was born from 1750 to 1775 in Virginia and died after 1805.

General Notes: Chalkley, Vol. 3 CHRONICLES OF THE Scotch-Irish Settlement IN VIRGINIA EXTRACTED FROM THE ORIGINAL COURT RECORDS OF AUGUSTA COUNTY 1745-1800 DEED BOOK NO. 15. ADDITIONAL MEMBERS OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. page 486
Page 456.--18th October, 1768. John Buchanan and Margaret and William Thompson and Mary, to James Skidmore, £55.5, 88 acres, part of a tract patented to John and William, 8th April, 1767, on James River, John Jones's line. Teste: Robert Campbell, Hugh Logan, David Smith. Delivered: Randolph Guin per order filed 22d June, 1798.
-- so he must've lived in Augusta co in June 1798

Noted events in his life were:

• Residence: Jun 1798, Augusta Co, VA. See Chalkley entry.

• Census: 1805, Greene co, Tennessee. On tax list.

3. James GUIN Sr. (Patrick1) was born about 1747 in Jamestown, Virginia and died in 1824 in Greene co, Tennessee about age 77.

General Notes: The Mormon Church records indicate that James Sr. was born in Jamestown, VA, but we know that they later moved to Augusta Co., VA. Later these Guinns lived in Rockingham Co., VA. They may not have actually moved from Augusta; Rockingham was carved out of Augusta. They are listed on the census there in 1787, and James Sr's brother Hugh was married there in 1785.

All records show a marriage date for James and Jane as 1/13/1792, but I believe this is wrong, since John was born in 1783. It's possible their marriage date was really 1/13/1782 rather than 1792. (The other possibility is that James was married before, and Jane is not the mother of his children.)

James's will was probated July 1824 in Greene co TN. Lists his children John, Evan, James Jr., and Elizabeth.

Noted events in his life were:

• Census: 1805, Greene co, Tennessee. Present on tax list.

• Census: 1810, Greene co, Tennessee.

• Census: 1812, Greene co, Tennessee. Present on tax list.

James married Jane HICKLIN, daughter of John HICKLIN, on 24 Jan 1792 in Augusta Co, VA.1 Jane was born before 1774.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 8 M    i. John GUIN was born on 10 Jun 1783 in Virginia and died in 1829 at age 46.

   9 F    ii. Elizabeth GUIN .

   10 M    iii. Evan GUIN .

11 M    iv. James GUIN Jr.

4. Robert GUIN Esq. (Patrick1) was born before 1773 in Virginia (probably Augusta co) and died on 19 Nov 1813 in Greene co, Tennessee.

General Notes: Robert Guin Esq. was a judge.

Robert married Ursula ROBINSON, daughter of Peter ROBINSON, on 16 Nov 1793 in Bath co, Virginia.2 Ursula was born before 1777 and died from 1824 to 1825 in Greene co, Tennessee.

General Notes: The Greene Co., TN court minutes from July 1814 list Ursula as Robert's widow. Ursula must have died in either 1824 or 1825, because then the two youngest children, Nancy and Alpha, were orphaned. Custody of them was then given to the husband of their sister, Eliza G. Hunter. His name was Alfred Hunter and he was the sheriff at that
time.

Children from this marriage were:

   12 M    i. Peter Robinson GUIN .

   13 M    ii. Daniel McDonald GUIN .

General Notes: Daniel McDonald Guinn was the sheriff for several years in Greene Co TN.

+ 14 F    iii. Eliza G. GUIN .

+ 15 F    iv. Eliza Jane GUIN .

   16 M    v. Alpha GUIN .

   17 F    vi. Nancy GUIN .

5. Hugh GUIN (Patrick1) was born from 1750 to 1765 in Virginia.

General Notes: Hugh Guin had a son named John and a son named James. I believe this James is my ggg-grandfather. I have not been able to tie my James to Hugh for sure, but I am pretty certain from research. Children of James and Sarah Rector Guinn (my ggg-grandparents) were: John R. Guinn (Gwinn on 1850 census), b. 5/15/1824, J. T. Guinn, B. 8/31/1825, Katherine C. "Kit" Guinn, b. 5/24/1827, R. McDonald Guinn (listed as just McDonald on the 1850 census) b. 7/4/1829, Alexander S. C. Guinn, b. 10/1/1831, Evan N. P. Guinn, b.7/14/1835, Deborah A. Guinn, b. 5/17/1837, Margaret Jane Guinn, b. 7/17/1839, Nancy M. Guinn, b. 5/15/1843, and Robert McPherson Guinn, b. 6/29/1845 (my gg-grandfather).

Hugh married Margaret FAIRBURN on 27 Sep 1785 in Rockingham Co, VA. Margaret was born before 1769.

Children from this marriage were:

18 M    i. John GUIN was born from 1785 to 1805 in VA.

19 M    ii. James GUIN was born from 1785 to 1805 in VA.
